Spine surgery treats problems such as a slipped disc pressing on a nerve, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the canal that holds the spinal cord), vertebrae that have slipped out of line, and scoliosis (a sideways curve of the spine). Many people with back pain improve without an operation, so a surgeon's first task is to decide whether surgery will help you at all.
Send a recent MRI of the affected part of the spine, standing X-rays, any CT scans or nerve conduction tests, and a short note of your symptoms: where the pain goes, any numbness or weakness, and how far you can walk. These details matter as much as the scans.
The price depends on how many levels of the spine are treated and which implants are used, such as screws, cages or an artificial disc. Ask each hospital to state these clearly. Sitting through a long flight soon after spine surgery can be hard, so think about the distance home when you choose between countries.
